Troop 1631 activities, August 1-7

Thanks to Ted, Kevin, Hay, Bill, and Phiet

Summer Camp note: Thanks to Ted Long, Kevin Clark, Hay Chan, Bill Vautrain and Phiet Pham for taking such good care of our boys...and for not feeding any of them to the bears. (There had to be some tempting moments.) Great job, guys! Lots of pictures from summer camp by Hay and Bill have been posted at www.t1631.org, under Photo Albums / 2005 / 07 (or just click on a picture).

Advance Notice: It's almost POPCORN time again. It's still early--sales won't begin until sometime in October--but it's never too early to start thinking about one of the best ways for the boys to raise money. Around 1/3 of the money raised goes straight to the boys' Scout Accounts. Jackie Hidalgo will be running it again, with help this year from Vanessa Mao. Thank you, ladies, for stepping forward to help our boys!

Activities August 1-7

*08/01 (Mon.7:00-8:30pm) - PLC at First Colony Christian Church. All troop leadership expected to attend.

08/05-07 (Fri.6pm-Sun.12pm) - Troop JLT Campout. THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT WEEKEND. All new leaders will be expected to attend this very special, and well-planned campout. Every minute of this weekend is designed by plan to instruct the boys about leadership, their roles in the troop, planning and expectations for their role. If your son is selected or elected into leadership then attendance at the Troop JLT Campout is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED. This campout is very important for several reasons. First, it helps integrate your son into the new leadership. Second, it explains to your son his responsibility to his patrol or the troop. Third, it provides your son with direct access to his Patrol Advisor, and to the adult leadership of the troop. And, finally, it's a fun weekend where your son will learn more about the Scouting program in two days than he's learned to date. That's my personal guarantee.
So, the bottom line is this for parents. If you son is selected into leadership for the upcoming Fall term, I fully expect them to attend the JLT Campout August 5-7. I'll be there. The patrol advisors will be there. It's important to the success of the troop that your son be there, too.

08/07 (Sun.2:00pm
) - Jeff Kammerman Eagle Court of Honor. Christ United Methodist Church, 3300 Austin Parkway, upstairs in room 210-211. Please RSVP to jkammerman@houston.rr.com or 281-265-8354.

Scouting accident

Saturday, July 30, 2005

FRESNO, Calif.  — Lightning struck a group of Boy Scouts taking shelter from a storm, killing the troop leader and a 13-year-old boy in the latest tragedy to befall the organization this week, authorities said.

The teen, Ryan Collins, died Friday night at the University Medical Center in Fresno, said hospital spokeswoman Mary Lisa Russell. He had been kept alive for a day on a ventilator so his organs could be donated, his family said.

The assistant scoutmaster, Steve McCullagh, 29, was killed instantly when the bolt made a direct strike on a tarp the Scouts had set up in a meadow in Sequoia National Park on Thursday, the coroner's office said.

"He didn't even make it off the mountain," said Sue Collins, the boy's mother, crying along with her husband and younger son at the hospital. "It's horrible. It's a fluke."

Six others were injured.

The lightning strike came just days after four Scout leaders were electrocuted while putting up a tent at the National Scout Jamboree in Virginia. Dozens of Scouts were sickened by the stifling heat two days later at the jamboree.

At least one of the injured in the lightning strike was kept alive only because the troop managed to administer CPR for an hour, park ranger Alex Picavet said. It is not known which injured person that was.

"That's amazing," Picavet said. "It's very difficult. It's probably because of their Boy Scout training."

One troop member was being kept for observation at the Fresno hospital, and all the others were treated and released from another hospital, authorities said.

The scout group from St. Helena, which included five adults and seven teenage scouts, had been camping for a week as part of a nine-day backcountry hike along the John Muir Trail.

Two teenagers ran 25 minutes to a ranger station after the strike, and five helicopters flew in to evacuate the group.

"They did the best they could in the situation they were in," Picavet said. "They didn't have metal poles, and stayed away from high points."

Bill Collins said his grandson was a scout for more than three years and loved the outdoors.

"He was a fabulous boy. He was doing what he loved to do," Collins said. "It's just a tremendous shock to everybody."

Safety Training

As you may have read in the news a tragic electrical accident at the National Boy Scout Jamboree in Virginia claimed the lives of four adult leaders.

Fortunately, no Scouts were injured although some of the Scouts were sons of the leaders killed.  Our hearts and sympathy go out to those families affected.

In spite of the emphasis on safety and safety training occasionally accidents happen.  However, we do our best to make sure that our activities are safe and that all experiences are positive experiences.

Our troop has an excellent safety record and that is the direct result of an emphasis on safety, the safety training that each adult leader is required to take, the procedures we have in place and the diligence we exercise in following those procedures.

Just this summer, for example, we safely conducted two long range camps in New Mexico.  These trips involved interstate transportation, camping in rugged environments, adventurous activities and a safe return.  These trips don't happen by chance.  The Philmont trek, for example, was two years in planning with weekly meetings during the final three months.  Safety was Number One on the agenda.  Over 20,000 Scouts and leaders attend Philmont every summer and the only way to conduct a program like that is Safely.

I would like to assure all parents and Scouts that in Troop 1631 we take safety very seriously.  All of our leaders undergo continuous safety training and we conduct our campouts and activities with Safety First in mind.  This is especially applicable to water safety.  We are able to have fun in the outdoors because we practice safety in everything we do.

I am personally committed to running a Scouting program that is safe and fun.  I am sure that I have complete support from parents, leaders and Scouts in this aim.

Yours in Scouting,
    Bill Farrell
    Scoutmaster, Troop 1631

Summer Camp update

SUMMER CAMP UPDATE- I have heard from Bill Vautrain twice since their departure.  Things are going well.  He says "This is a good group of boys".  All the boys are getting along well & so far there has been no homesickness.  The big news is there is a bear cub in camp.  A game warden has set a trap for it. They think the cub is about 6 months old and its mother is no longer alive.  Look for lots of pictures & stories of the cub upon their return.  Last I heard Wednesday is still their day off from regular camp & they were going to White Sands & the Space Museum.  I'll update the website on Saturday periodically with estimated arrival time.  They are hoping for around midnight on Sat. night (Sunday morning).   Sandra Vautrain

One change since our last meeting is that it is not necessary for the boys to bring tents.  The adults plan to bring three large tents for camping the first night, near Carlsbad, New Mexico.

A permission slip has been posted on the website at http://www.t1631.org/files/SummerCampPermissionSlip.doc .  In addition, an equipment checklist of things the boys need to bring to camp is posted at http://www.t1631.org/files/PersonalEquipmentList.doc .  Please review these documents prior to departure.

If you have any questions, Bill Vautrain plans to attend the Troop Meeting Monday evening.
