Troop 1631 activities September 19-25

Note to Troop 1631 adults: A New Leader Essentials class is offered this Saturday, Sep.17, from 10AM to 12PM at Christ United Methodist Church in room 210A, 3300 Austin Pkwy. New Leader Essentials is the initial training for adult leaders serving youth in the Boy Scouts of America.  It will be offered again on Thursday October 20 and Saturday November 5.  For more info see http://www.tomahawkdistrict.org/trn/NLE.htm

Webmaster Minute: As an experiment, I'm sending (and attaching) the calendar this week in a printable monthly format.  I plan to discontinue the "Coming up" list that I've been appending for so long; maintaining two calendars is far too time-consuming and error prone.  The calendars can be printed either from the attachment or from the website. Go to http://www.t1631.org and click Calendar (or link directly with
http://my.calendars.net/texastroop1631), then use File / Print Preview to see how it will  look.  If you prefer landscape mode, use File / Page Setup.  The month can be selected at the top, and other viewing options are available at the bottom left.  Also, many of the events on the website can be clicked to reveal more information. Finally, if you notice any errors or missing events, PLEASE send an email to cliff@t1631.org.

"Progress should mean that we are always changing the world to suit the vision. Progress does mean...that we are always changing the vision...
Silly examples are always simpler; let us suppose a man wanted a particular kind of world; say, a blue world.  [H]e might toil for a long time at the transformation; he could work away...until all was blue. He could have heroic adventures; the putting of the last touches to a blue tiger...  But if he worked hard, that high-minded reformer would certainly (from his own point of view) leave the world better and bluer than he found it.  If he altered a blade of grass to his favourite colour every day, he would get on slowly.  But if he altered his favourite colour every day, he would not get on at all.  If, after reading a fresh philosopher, he started to paint everything red or yellow, his work would be thrown away: there would be nothing to show except a few blue tigers walking about, specimens of his early bad manner."  -- G.K.Chesterton, from Orthodoxy (1908)

Well DONE!

Well done! Well done! Well DONE!

Tonight's troop meeting was an inspiration. Well run and well done.

To recap, we hosted the Cub Scout Readyman badge, sort of like First Aid, and each patrol was responsible for teaching one of the requirements.

It went like clockwork thanks to the combined efforts of adults and Scouts alike. Special thanks to the patrol advisors for helping to pull this off.

I even talked with a Webelos leader who told me he'd LOVE to have a Den Chief. We'll provide one for him, I guarantee. This is exactly the kind of event we need to host. The kids had a lot of fun, it was definitely boy led.

Kudos to Daniel Goodman, SPL, for an excellent job of running the meeting, keeping order and getting us out on time. Splendid job.

I am so charged up about this. I'm looking forward to our next event on Sept 26. Next week we have a debriefing and I'll be interested to learn from the boys what they thought went well and what could be improved.

Again, well done to everybody.

Yours in Scouting,

Bill

Activities - September 12-18

Reminder: Sat.5:30-10pm - Shrimp Fest service project.

----------------========<+>========----------------

Activities - September 12-18

IMPORTANT: The Troop meeting this Monday will begin at 6:15pm at Colony Bend Elementary. We will be helping Webelos Scouts earn their Readyman badge, and each Patrol has a role. We also need several moms to help with sign in and greeting, along with our Troop Guides and Recruiter. ASMs will be helping at stations and with greeting.
This event is a very important recruiting opportunity for the troop, so please read the following carefully, and please Be Prepared to help!

Readyman:

10 minutes per station in rotation.
10 Webelos in each group. There will be at least 2--but preferably 4--Troop 1631 Scouts and at least one adult advisor per station.

All Troop 1631 members need to arrive at 6:15 pm to practice their parts.
Please go back and read Readyman requirements in your Webelos handbooks if possible.

The patrol assignments are as follows:

Station A - Tiger Patrol
1. Explain what first aid is. Tell what you should do after an accident.
2. Explain how you can get help quickly if there is an emergency in your home. Make a “help list” of people or agencies that can help you if you need it. Post it near phone or other place with easy access. (Mrs. Wedelich will have cards printed with space for write in of personal numbers.)

Station B - Bobcat Patrol
3. Show what to do for these “hurry cases”: Serious bleeding, Stopped breathing, Internal poisoning, Heart attack. (We will have a ‘ressuci-Annie’ doll to demonstrate CPR very quickly – no cubs will practice on her)

Station C - Cobra Patrol
4. Show how to treat for shock.
5. Show first aid for the following: Cuts and scratches, Burns and scalds, Choking. (what items do you need here? blanket? Gauze...Someone needs to get the troop box of supplies from the trailer)

Station D - Penguin Patrol
6. Tell what steps must be taken for a safe swim with your Webelos den, pack, family, or other group. Explain the reasons for the buddy system.

Station E - Raccoon Patrol
7. Explain six safety rules you should follow when driving a bicycle. (Daniel G. to bring bike and helmet)

Station F - Polar Bear Patrol
9. Explain how to use each item in a first aid kit. (bring a first aid kit – decide what items should be included, and what should not)
