Re-Charter tomorrow!

Camp Hamman Winter Bivouac
Hello All,
The Scouts who attended the Winter Bivouac at Camp Hamman near Banderas,
Texas, had a great time hiking in the hills, playing a geographic game of
Capture the Flag, cooking on backpacking stoves of several varieties and
hiking in the rain on the way out.
In short, this was a perfect mini-Philmont trek and all the boys did a great
job of coping in the outdoors and handling inclement weather.
We arrived at Camp Hamman between 10-11 pm and set up camp. The winds were
ferocious and several tents went bounding across the pasture like giant,
multicolored tumbleweeds, although tumbleweeds, in general, aren't chased by
Scouts! Once tethered to the ground we snuggled down to a short winter's
nap amid the darkness and quiet of the Hill Country. A few coyotes howled
in the distance, and a few Scoutmasters howled close by, but the boys
ignored both and slept on.
In the morning we got up, cooked breakfast on camp stoves, packed up and
prepared for the hike to Spring Lake, about 5 miles away. The wind had died
down and the sun came out so after a mile or so we took off our coats,
readjusted our packs, and set off for our destination. Finally, after much
consulting of maps, stars, compasses and advisors we arrived at our
destination and found that other troops had arrived too.
Fortunately, the early arrivers failed to spot the best camping spot in the
entire valley and we claimed it for our own. Will McKeever set up a
hammock, Mr. Farrell picked out a choice location nestled between wind
breaking trees and the rest of the crew pitched their tents on the flat land
in the middle. After dinner we headed out for the campfire and had a great
time watching skits and the antics of the EmCees.
Sunday morning we were greeted by rain which fell all day. We donned our
rain gear, broke camp and hiked out of the canyon in the rain but to no ill
effect. All the Scouts were prepared for the rain and we made it back to
base camp without incident.
Well, almost.
We arrived at base camp climbing out of a ravine into a horse corral...full
of horses! The boys were a bit skittish as the large animals eyed us with
suspicion, but we made it across the corral to the gate and all was well.
Happy horses, Happy Scouts!
The return trip was long and wet but the Adult Advisors did a fine job
keeping everybody safe and the Scouts earned a Hamman Winter Bivouac patch.
Good time for all. Congratulations to the boys for surviving the weekend
and the weather.

Well done to Scouts and Advisors on a successful Winter Bivouac.
Yeah, you didn't get the cold frost of previous bivouacs, but you did get
rain and that's special!

Spring Leadership 2006
Hello All,
Welcome to 2006 and the Spring program for 2006. We have many exciting
adventures ahead of us and we are looking forward to the next few months
filled with activities. Spring is a busy time for Scouts!
First, I'd like to acknowledge our current SPL, Daniel Goodman, for the fine
job he's done. Daniel did an excellent job in running the monthly Patrol
Leader Council meetings, keeping order during troop meetings and serving as
an example of leadership to the rest of the boys in the troop. I'm very
proud of Daniel's work and applaud him.
Second, I'd like to welcome our new SPL, Jacob Haney, who will guide the
Troop 1631 ship into the new year. Jacob is a seasoned Scout working on his
Eagle rank who is experienced in both Northern Tier and Philmont. Jacob
brings both maturity and Scouting experience to the job of SPL and we're
looking forward to a great Spring session with Jacob at the helm.
The remaining troop leadership positions (scribe, librarian, quartermaster,
etc) will be named soon.
This is the news: On the weekend of February 10-12 we will be holding our
Junior Leadership Training campout at Camp Mauritz. This is a very, very
important camping weekend for Scouts who are in leadership positions. This
includes patrol leaders, troop guides and all troop leadership positions.
JLT is not to be missed. It's an essential part of the leadership
requirement.
At JLT the boys will be exposed to team building, leadership principles,
troop organization, their role in running the troop as well as having a lot
of fun. We play games, have exciting campfires and surprising challenges.
Literally, it is a weekend not to be missed.
And, if all the fun weren't enough, the boys don't cook any meals or clean
up. The adults cook and clean for the boys. What a treat!
So, parents of boys who may be in leadership positions, mark your calendars
today for Feb 10-12. It's the best weekend of the year and I'll guarantee
that.
Yours in Scouting,
Bill
p.s. I would like to extend an invitation to parents of boys who will be
attending JLT to join us for the fun and experience the training your boy is
receiving. Alas, you will be responsible for your own cooking, but it will
be a fun and memorable weekend that you will remember for years to come.
Hamman camping trip reminders:
A BOR was convened on 1/16/2006 to review the advancement of Cody Powers. The Board found that Cody met all the requirements and advanced him to the rank of Tenderfoot Scout. Congratulations Cody for taking the first step on the trail to the Eagle's Nest!
