Family Campout / Beach house trip - May 5-7th

Check out the beach house! Last chance to go to your son's Court of Honor & not have to drive back to Sugar Land & do some "faux" camping. Not to mention that romantic beach sunset, your own private yacht (ferry) ride, and the exciting Bolivar nightlife with free babysitting!!

I think on family campout the scouts have to wait on us & cook for us etc....! To earn that family life merit badge????
Or if you like educational things- lets' all go to Fort Travis & see the prison cells- there might even be some ghosts there.Maybe Jane or James Long!

Ladies,
Better yet maybe we could do some shopping!

So, if not at the beach house then we MUST at least 'faux' camp at the motel!

Scout Fair - Recruiting

From: Hank Wedelich [mailto:hank@wedelich.com]

Parents and Scouts,

Scout Fair is an excellent opportunity to recruit boys for our troop.  Prospects can visit Scout Fair, help out at our booth making rope and cooking cobbler, and see all of the cool activities done by other scouts.  Scout Fair is coming up, next Saturday April 22nd.

The patch that means the most to me worn by a boy is the recruiter patch.  It means he is having so much fun in Scouting that he wants to bring his friends.  Parents, please encourage your boys to use Scout Fair as an opportunity to see if their friends might be interested in our troop.

There is no time better than now to join Boy Scouts!

Hank

Family Campout / Beach house trip - May 5-7th

Troop 1631 parents,

I had one family (Oloomi) interested in the beach house, although they would like to share it with others.  This is one more reminder before I assume we will all be either campers or hotelers.  Debbie and I are at the beach over Easter.  Call us on my cell 281 732 4208 if interested.

Also, the county police often check inspection stickers and registration for the captive audience of cars on the ferry.  So, if you have car stuff that expires in April, you want to get that taken  care of before crossing the ferry.

Yours in Scouting,

Hank Wedelich

Troop 1631 Family Campout - May 5-7

From: Hank Wedelich [mailto:hank@wedelich.com]
Sent: Wednesday, April 05, 2006 1:37 PM
Subject: Troop 1631 Family Campout - May 5-7
To:  Troop 1631 Parents

The troop's outdoor activity in May is a Family Campout at the Wedelich beach house on Bolivar Peninsula.  Bolivar is on the Gulf Coast, northeast of Galveston.  A free ferry runs every 20 minutes or so from Galveston across the bay to Bolivar Peninsula.  The trip from Sugar Land normally takes about 2 hours.  Our beach house is on two lots, about 100 yards from the beach, with plenty of space to camp.  Hurricane season is a distant memory.

For the boys, a family campout is no different than a regular campout.  Scouts are encouraged to attend, even if their families cannot make it.  We meet Friday night and return Sunday noon.  But, families are also invited to come to the campout.  Familes can come for the entire weekend, or just come for part of the campout.  We will be cooking a community meal for Saturday evening, and we are also holding our May Court of Honor that Saturday night.  This is an excellent opportunity for parents to see how the boys camp as scouts.  Activities will include fishing, water activities (body surf, kayak, swimming), beach fun and games (bring volleyball, frisbee, football, horseshoes), cooking, and maybe even a little advancement.  This is a great time for families in the troop to get to know each other better.

I know that some of our families don't quite share the same passion for camping.  I do want to encourange all who can to come to this event.  Options include:

1.  Come pitch a tent and have a blast.  The nights are still nice and cool near the beach as the water temperature is still cool.
2.  Enjoy a great Saturday day-trip.  Leave Sugar Land in the morning; spend the day at the beach, and return after dinner and the Court of Honor.  We should be done with the ceremony by about 8 pm, so you can be back home by 10 pm.
3.  Stay in luxury, and help with our capacity planning.  Families who want to come Friday night and stay thru Sunday can join together and rent a nearby beach house.  One of our neighbors has a very nice house that connects to the back yard of our lot.  The house has 3 bedrooms and a loft with 2 more double beds and can accomodate 3 families.  I am hoping for takers here, as it also give us several more bathrooms for the crowd.  Cost is about $350 for the weekend (~$120 per family if we get 3 interested) - this is a discounted rate directly from the owner.    Let me know this week if you are interested as the house needs to be reserved soon.  More info on the house is at: http://morerealty.com/soonerstarinside.htm
4.  Stay Sat night at a hotel.  Best choice is Joy Sands Motel, rooms with 2 double beds at $85/night.  You will need to make reservations 3 weeks or more before the campout to get a room.  Phone is 409-684-6152.
5.  Not really an option, but you can stay home in Sugar Land and miss a great time.

We will have more information on the campout in April - maps, permission slip, food plans, what to bring.  I mostly wanted to get this on your calendar and make some of the non-camping options available for those who care to take advantage of them.

Hope to see you at the beach,

Hank Wedelich

Troop 1631 activities

Troop 1631 Calendar Notes:

- Troop Meeting at 7:00 PM on April 3, Colony Bend Elementary.

- Camporee at Camp Bovay next weekend, April 7-9.

- PLC at 7 PM April 10 at First Colony Christian Church.

- Scout Fair is coming up on April 22, and the boys will be working one of two shifts, either 8:00 - 1:00 PM or 12:30 PM - 5:30 PM.  We plan to demonstrate some good camp cooking skills.

- Be sure to put the May 5-7 Family Campout and Court of Honor on your calendar.  The campout will be near the Wedelich's beach house on Bolivar Peninsula, a free ferry ride east of Galveston.  Note that this is considered a regular campout for the boys, but it is hoped that all troop families will be there.  Even if your family can't camp, you are more than welcome to attend the Court of Honor Saturday evening (please bring your own chair).  A map and driving directions will be provided.
