Boy Scouts' deed saves girl from drowning

Boy Scouts' deed saves girl from drowning
Wed Aug 23 2006 08:49:32 ET

Some Omaha Boy Scouts are credited with a very good deed: rescuing a little girl from drowning.

At Two Rivers State Recreation Area on Saturday afternoon, 18-month-old Stephanie Pacheco slipped away from her mother and began floating face-down in the Platte River, said Duane Arp, a conservation officer with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

The OMAHA WORLD-HERALD reports: About five members of St. Cecilia's Troop 100 were swimming nearby during a camping trip to earn merit badges. Christian Nanson, 11, spotted the girl in the water and yelled to fellow Scout John Fitzgerald, 9, said assistant Scoutmaster Matt Fitzgerald. Matt and John Fitzgerald are father and son.

The two boys ran to the girl and grabbed her out of the water. "She was probably literally minutes away from a tragedy," Arp said.

Once ashore, the girl began vomiting water but started breathing. Douglas County Sheriff's Deputy David Brock said the girl was treated for hypothermia and was in intermediate care at Children's Hospital. A hospital spokeswoman declined to release Stephanie's condition Sunday afternoon.

Arp said the girl had been swimming with a group of family members but had chased after some dogs playing in the water about 3:30 p.m.

Matt Fitzgerald said all the boys in the troop remained calm during the rescue and they all helped. The two boys pulled the girl out of the water, while other Scouts located a cell phone to call for help and directed rescue.

Reminder - Parent meeting Wednesday

The following resolution was passed at the May 17 Troop Parent/Committee Meeting:

More parents need to start attending the monthly parent meeting.  As it is, just three or four people are making all the decisions which impact the entire troop.  In addition, these are mostly parents of older scouts who will be leaving the troop within a couple of years.  It was suggested that current active members begin calling and soliciting other parents to attend.

Please consider joining us at 7:30 PM Wednesday evening, at First Colony Christian Church across from Clements HS (usually upstairs).

Award for one of Troop 1631's finest!

Congratulations to Debbie Wedelich for being awarded the highest honor the
Sam Houston Area Council can bestow: the Silver Beaver.

The Silver Beaver is awarded for distinguished service to youth. The
council is limited in how many Silver Beavers can be awarded in a year, and
the recipient must be nominated by his or her peers, and pass a stringent
review board.

Debbie has been a part of Scouting all her life and has worked with Girl
Scouts, Cubs, Boy Scouts and at the district level in many capacities.
Debbie embodies Scout spirit defined as living the Scout Oath and Law in
one's everyday actions. In addition to donating her time to Scouting Debbie
is involved in a number of other charitable activities. Debbie is the proud
mother of two Eagle Scouts, with a third on the way, and a Gold Award Girl
Scout.

The Silver Beaver is a well-deserved award for Debbie and I'm sure I speak
for us all when I say, Debbie, your tireless work and endless energy has
improved all of our lives, and many people we'll never know. Our society is
better for you and people like you who value service and dedication to
others so highly. Congratulations on this honor. You are more than
deserving of it and we are all very, very proud of you.

Yours in Scouting,
Bill Farrell

Troop 1631 end-of-summer party

To celebrate the last week of summer vacation the troop meeting next Monday will be held at Grant's Lake, at 2419 Hodges Bend Circle in Sugar Land, the home of Cliff, Lois and Chance Raymond (see map). This is a family event, so your entire family is invited. To give the boys more time, we plan to start about 6PM, and stop when it gets dark.

We plan to have at least 3 canoes, a kayak, and a paddle boat, but if you have something that floats, please bring it! (If it's too large to fit through my gate you probably should launch it on the other side of the lake.) No one will be allowed on the water without a PFD, so also please bring life jackets. Water pistols and other water toys are also okay to bring.

MOST IMPORTANT.....Please wear water shoes in case you should accidentally fall in the water. Swimming is not permitted--Grants Lake is NOT a swimming pool--and there are known to be some sharp objects on the bottom!

It would be very helpful if you would respond to this message with how many in your family plan to attend. We plan to pick up hot dogs, hamburgers and veggies on Monday, and would like to have some idea how much we'll need.

Thanks for your help, and we hope to see all of you next Monday!
